Functional Patterns in Austin
The training system we run, explained plainly: what it is, who it suits, what it costs, and what the evidence does and doesn't support.

Functional Patterns is a training system built around the four movements a human body is designed to do: stand, walk, run and throw. At Kinetic Blueprint in Old West Austin, eight FP-certified practitioners teach it. Every program starts by measuring your posture, gait and force transfer, and you re-test against that baseline as you train. It's training, not physical therapy.
Functional Patterns is the training system we run at Kinetic Blueprint, and this page explains it without the sales gloss.
Most training organises around muscles. Functional Patterns organises around how you move: stand, walk, run, throw. Those four patterns are what actually distribute load through a body, so they're what we measure and what we train.
Why the method starts with a measurement
The body works as a system. When one area can't do its job, another picks up the slack and takes force it wasn't built for. That overloaded spot is where you feel the ache, which is why a knee can hurt because of how a hip rotates, and a shoulder can hurt because of how the ribs and spine sit.
Treat only the sore spot and the chain that overloaded it is still there. So we measure the chain first: posture, gait, force transfer. Then we map the pattern, train it, and re-measure against your own baseline. The movement assessment is where that starts, and gait analysis is the walk-and-run half of it. The method page breaks down each of the four patterns.
Who it's for, honestly
It fits people who have been through the usual round of fixes and keep landing back at the same ache, and people training hard who want the mechanics measured before they add more load.
It isn't a substitute for medical care. Kinetic Blueprint is a movement and biomechanics training studio, not a clinic. When your situation needs a diagnosis, imaging or medical care, we say so and refer you out.
Who trains you here
Six practitioners, and every one is Functional Patterns certified. Benjamin Merworth holds HBS Level IV and Kristie Merworth HBS Level III, and the two of them co-founded the studio. Gino Delisa and Gina are HBS Level I. Anna Baulo and Jordyn White are Human Foundations certified. Every bio is on the team page.
If you want the evidence question answered at length, read Does Functional Patterns actually work?. If you'd rather see it, the Complimentary Consultation is thirty minutes in the studio and costs nothing.
What the evidence supports, and what it doesn't
Exercise therapy probably reduces chronic low back pain compared with no treatment or usual care, at moderate certainty. The average functional benefit in that review was small and sat below the threshold researchers call clinically important.
A large review found that strength and resistance work, along with coordination and stabilisation (motor control) training, reduced chronic low back pain the most, while cardio alone and generic combined programs didn't.
