Body Composition Testing in Austin: InBody, VO2 Max, and What the Numbers Mean

Updated 2026-07-21

Body composition testing measures what your body is actually made of - muscle, fat, and where it sits - instead of what a scale guesses. At Kinetic Blueprint in Old West Austin, we use InBody to break down muscle mass and body fat by segment, and we can test VO2 max for cardiorespiratory fitness. These numbers set the baseline your whole plan is measured against. Testing is part of the Foundational Assessment.

What is body composition testing?

A bathroom scale gives you one number that hides everything that matters. Two people at the same weight can have completely different amounts of muscle and fat. Body composition testing separates them.

We use InBody, a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) device, to measure muscle mass, body fat percentage, and segmental balance - how muscle and fat distribute across your arms, trunk, and legs. BIA tracks body composition well over time, which is its real value here: same device, same conditions, so your trend is honest (PMID: 30001381). And body composition is a better health signal than weight. Higher body fat, and visceral fat in particular, is associated with worse long-term health outcomes (PMID: 35717418).

This is the same principle behind everything we do: measure first, then train. Numbers turn a plan from a guess into a blueprint.

What we test

  • InBody body composition - skeletal muscle mass, body fat percentage, segmental muscle/fat balance, and body water. A full-body read in a couple of minutes.
  • VO2 max - your cardiorespiratory fitness, the volume of oxygen your body can use under load. Cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the strongest markers of long-term health: each step up in fitness is associated with meaningfully lower mortality risk (PMID: 19454641), and the American Heart Association calls fitness a clinical vital sign (PMID: 27881567).
  • Re-testing - we re-run the numbers through your program so change is proven, not assumed.

Who body composition testing is for

  • Anyone starting a training program who wants a real baseline instead of a scale number.
  • People losing weight who want to protect muscle, not just drop pounds.
  • Athletes tracking muscle balance and conditioning across a season.
  • Anyone managing long-term health where muscle mass and visceral fat matter more than body weight.

What the numbers mean

Metric What it tells you Why it matters
Skeletal muscle mass How much lean muscle you carry Muscle drives metabolism, strength, and long-term function
Body fat % Fat relative to total mass A truer read than weight; tracks real change
Segmental balance Left/right and upper/lower distribution Exposes asymmetry that training should address
VO2 max Cardiorespiratory fitness A strong marker of fitness and healthy aging

Numbers pair with nutrition support when it helps. See nutrition at Kinetic Blueprint.

How testing works here

  1. Book the assessment. InBody is part of the Foundational Assessment ($279 founding price, from $379). Claim Free Consult.
  2. Measure. InBody body composition, plus VO2 max when it fits your goal.
  3. Map. The numbers set your baseline and shape the plan.
  4. Re-test. We re-run them to prove the change.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is InBody?

InBody uses bioelectrical impedance, a well-established method for tracking body composition over time. Its strength is consistency: same device, same conditions, so your change is real and comparable (PMID: 30001381). For a single precise snapshot a DXA scan is the reference standard, but for tracking your own trend, InBody is ideal.

How should I prepare for a body composition test?

Come well-hydrated but not immediately after a large meal or hard workout, since both can shift a reading. We keep conditions consistent across re-tests.

What is a good VO2 max?

It depends on age and sex, and the useful comparison is you against your own baseline over time. Higher cardiorespiratory fitness is consistently linked with better health outcomes.

Do I have to be a member to get tested?

No. Body composition and VO2 testing are part of the Foundational Assessment, open to new clients.

Is this a medical test?

No. This is fitness and training measurement, not a medical diagnosis. If a result suggests you should see a physician, we tell you.
