Gait Analysis in Austin: See How You Walk and Run

Updated 2026-07-21

Gait analysis is a filmed, structured breakdown of how you walk and run. At Kinetic Blueprint in Old West Austin, we capture your gait on video, score the mechanics against the four human patterns, and use it to find the root cause of knee, hip, and low-back pain. Gait is the most-repeated pattern in human life. Get it right and most lower-body complaints start to resolve upstream. Your gait analysis is part of the Foundational Assessment.

What is gait analysis?

Gait analysis is the study of how you move on your feet. We film you walking and running, then break down foot strike, hip and pelvis control, trunk rotation, and how load travels up the chain. The goal is not to label your walk good or bad. It is to see exactly where the pattern breaks so the training can fix the cause.

Walking is the pattern you repeat more than any other. Running is an accelerated version of the same mechanics under higher load. When the pattern is off, every step reinforces the problem. The good news: gait is trainable. In distance runners, gait retraining reliably changes running mechanics, raising step rate and lowering the impact loading rate on the body (PMID: 35128941), and real-time feedback on how you move has been shown to shift risky lower-limb patterns (PMID: 26158882). The early evidence that this prevents injury outright is still limited, so we train the mechanics we can measure and change.

At Kinetic Blueprint we read gait through the Functional Patterns lens: stand, walk, run, throw. Walk and run sit at the center of it.

What gait analysis measures at Kinetic Blueprint

  • Foot strike and contact - how and where your foot meets the ground, and what that does to the knee and hip above it.
  • Pelvis and hip control - the drops, shifts, and rotations that show up as knee or low-back pain.
  • Trunk and ribcage rotation - the counter-rotation that should power an efficient stride, and often does not.
  • Symmetry left to right - asymmetric sport and old injuries build asymmetric gait. We measure the gap.
  • Video, scored and saved - your gait becomes a baseline we re-test against, not a one-time opinion.

No vibes. Data. Every finding maps to a specific correction in your plan. See how gait fits the full movement assessment.

Who should get a gait analysis

  • Runners with recurring knee, shin, hip, or foot issues, or who want to run more efficiently.
  • People with chronic knee, hip, or low-back pain that has not resolved with rest or generic strengthening.
  • Anyone returning to activity after injury, surgery, or a long layoff.
  • Athletes whose sport depends on how well they move on their feet.

How gait analysis works here

  1. Book the assessment. Gait analysis is part of the Foundational Assessment ($279 founding price, from $379). Claim Free Consult.
  2. Film. We capture your walk and run on video.
  3. Read. We score the mechanics and connect them to your pain or performance goal.
  4. Map and move. The findings become corrective patterns you train, then we re-film to prove the change.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special equipment or a treadmill?

No. We film your natural walk and run in the studio. The read is on your mechanics, not a machine setting.

Can gait analysis help my knee or back pain?

Often, yes. Many knee, hip, and low-back complaints trace to how the pelvis and trunk behave during gait. We measure that and train the correction. It is movement training, not medical treatment. If something needs medical care, we refer out.

Is gait analysis only for runners?

No. Everyone walks. Gait analysis helps anyone with lower-body pain, a return-to-activity goal, or a sport that depends on moving well on their feet.

What do I leave with?

Your filmed baseline, the specific mechanics to change, and a plan. We re-film later to prove the change.

Is this the same as physical therapy?

No. Kinetic Blueprint is a movement and biomechanics training studio. We assess and train movement and refer out when care is needed.
